Rewind to 2019, I was doing endurance/ long distance road cycling combined with an office job, so I was spending upwards of 2-6 hours on the bike and then 7-8 hours at a desk, so my hips, knees and back really suffered as I did nothing else to help myself. Prior to that I played hockey for years, sailed and did skiing, with my childhood and early adult years focused in sport/ sport science and coaching.
My GP spotted I was hypermobile (pretty much everywhere) and I was referred for physio which I had for over 2 years. In this time, due to the extreme tightness and imbalance in my muscles, there were days I struggled to even walk/ change the gear in the car/ push a door open, let alone do any exercise! Now my physio told me for the whole time we were together to do Pilates or yoga, so I chose yoga as I thought Pilates was for the “older crowd” (no offence!). Yoga is great for someone else, but that person is not me as the long holds while stretching made my hypermobility more painful and no teacher actually took this into consideration in their classes. Again, back to almost square one with impaired waking for days after each class. I wouldn’t and couldn’t accept this constant pain anymore so I had many further tests done for arthritis or similar conditions, but thankfully all ruled out, however I do have tenosynovitis in my wrists and hypermobility pretty much everywhere!
Hypermobility ranges in severity/ regions/ pain, but for some this can truly be debilitating, especially if you do not have the condition explained to you fully, nor do you have the resources to help the condition or body awareness to move more mindfully.
Wanting to get back into mindful movement, I took the plunge and did a Pilates class and never looked back! My body is more balanced, stronger than ever, more mobile and my mental health is the best it has been in a number of years. My hypermobilty rarely flares now as my body awareness has dramatically increased and I know my healthy range within my body.
Now I won’t lie and say I did just one or two classes a week to get to where I am, for me I knew I needed a lifestyle shift as I was way too young to be feeling like my body was over 50, so discipline and classes every other day really did set off an upward trajectory of progress, which I am still working on now! - Yes even us teachers still have to do our own regular practice! Not everyone needs to attend that many classes, I just needed that many for the rehabilitative benefits and I wanted the results quickly after years of pain.
Amazed at my own transformation, I decided to train to be a Pilates teacher and give back all this Pilates goodness to others!
Why am I sharing this? Well if my story can make someone feel less scared to help themselves, then I consider that a job well done!
